Designing your bathroom is the perfect opportunity to create #hotelvibes. The increasing trend of creating spa levels of opulence, mean that designing your bathroom layout and finishes is crucial for achieving an oasis of calm and relaxation.
Here’s our top tips for nailing the aesthetics and practicality of your bathroom whatever your budget:
Always plan your layout before you start
Figure out the layout of your ideal bathroom early on. Start by deciding on what fittings you need in each room. Maybe you want a simple toilet and basin downstairs, or a full-on wet room for futureproofing (hello accessibility). Maybe you want to wow with a free-standing copper tub, or a combo bath and shower for all of the family.
Make a plan and include every element that will affect your design (window positions and external walls) as these will impact drainage and door openings.
>> Space saving tip: use pocket-doors that slide into a cavity in the wall to save on floor space <<
Try to ensure a clearance of 760mm between all sanitaryware, the wall and any other objects to maximise your comfort.
Elevate the look with fixtures
Once you’ve got functionality out of the way, it’s time to focus on the fun part: fixtures!
Choose fixtures that will be comfortable, fitting for the room and aesthetically pleasing.
>> Top tip: visit a bathroom retailer for their advice and recommendations even if you don’t buy from them <<
Consider storage systems to help the room look luxurious and clutter free. Built-in alcoves in the shower are super savvy for storage or style statements, and a countertop basin with cupboards underneath can look sleek whilst hiding bathroom essentials.
Choosing sanitaryware from all one range will help give a cohesive vibe in the room, whilst customising the brassware can give a luxe look. Metallic finishes such as brass and copper are a great way of adding subtle colour and warmth, giving an indulgent feel and spa-like experience.
>> Top tip: set your budget first. You can always upgrade fixtures later, so if your budget is limited look for sale items, ex-display or more basic ranges <<
Choose your coverings wisely
When planning the floor coverings, selecting water-resistant surfaces that won’t become too slippery when wet is essential.
Consider porcelain tiles for a low-maintenance, stain-proof and cleanable choice that come in wood and marble effect designs without the upkeep and at a fraction of the cost.
If you’re set in stone – limestone, slate or marble are your go-to’s for use in the bathroom but remember to re-seal the surface from time-to-time as it’s a naturally porous material.
Whilst sold timber is not advised (hello moisture trap), engineered boards work well, and if your budget is tight – vinyl is your wallet’s friend.
If you want to create an illusion of more space, use large wall tiles with less grout to help the area look uncluttered. And if character is more your thing, choose colour geometric tiles to inject character and charm.
