Decorating your space is one of the most rewarding parts of owning a home. But with so many options and so many choices when shopping, it’s hard to know where to start and what will or will not work in your space.
Here’s five core things to always keep in mind when decorating your home interior
Think about rhythm
We’re talking colour patterns, prints and shapes as these all influence the path your eye follows. Consider repeating elements of design (for example, three equal sized photo frames mounted vertically with equal space between them), alternating patterns, contrasting two elements (for example, different shaped frames next to each other) or progression where you can organise objects by size or follow a graduation of colour.
Consider proportions and scale
This is where you think about the size of objects and the ratio between them. For smaller rooms, keep patterns to scale and in taller, larger rooms, tall and substantial items of furniture really make an impact. But remember, leaving white space is key for balance and giving your eye a moment to rest.
Harmony and unity
When curating a space, it’s important to consider how the elements work together without clashing. As a guide, make sure you only have a few core colours in varying shades. Use similar shapes and textures to create a good flow and consistent patterns to create harmony. Then, choose accessories that fit within a theme.
Bring balance
When looking at your room you want to ensure there’s an equal distribution of visual weight. You can arrange objects in a variety of different ways: repeating them along a central axis, ensuring different objects of equal visual weight are on either side of the axis, or arranging objects around a central point extending inward or outward.
Think about emphasis
In a room you want to create focal points or specific areas of interest. Consider surrounding a fireplace with texture, adding spotlights above artwork to add emphasis, and chandeliers or beams to add texture and drama.
