Who said you need a large garden to create an outdoor haven. Not us! Vertical gardening is a great way to add greenery to petite spaces, small patios as well as encouraging sustainability and wildlife.
Here’s how to build your own vertical garden:
- Reuse old pallets to create a planter
Sand the pallet down and remove any protruding nails. Treat it with wood paint, varnish, or sealant. Depending on the style of pallet and the look you’re going for, you can hang pots off the slats on the flat side or consider removing the wooden planks from the pallet to create horizontal DIY shelves; idea for displaying succulents and herbs.
- Use drainpipes as space-saving planters
Half round gutters and brackets are available in most DIY shops, all you need to do is drill a few holes in the guttering for drainage and then attach it to a wall with brackets. Simply fill the guttering with compost and add a selection of plants with shallow roots (such as herbs). Consider layering levels of guttering to create visual interest and lots of greenery along the side of your home.
- Attach small lightweight pots to vertical drainpipes
If you’re really tight on space but want to add pops of colour to your outdoor area, consider buying drainpipe potholders to attach small plants to your existing drainpipes.
- Use a wooden ladder or wheelbarrow to create a display
Yes, you read that right. To add more greenery into your space than the floor/space will allow, consider hanging small plants and herbs from the rungs of a statement wooden ladder or fill a wheelbarrow with compost and greenery to add a versatile garden that can be moved around when needed.
